Teen Patti Rules: How to Play, Hand Rankings & Odds
Teen Patti (also called 3 Patti or Flash) is a three-card game from India where each player gets three cards and the best hand wins the pot. Hands rank, from highest to lowest: Trail, Pure Sequence, Sequence, Colour, Pair and High Card. This guide covers the full rules, betting terms, hand rankings and the real odds of each hand.
Teen Patti is one of the most searched card games in India, with tens of thousands of monthly searches for “3 patti rules”, “how to play teen patti” and “teen patti sequence”. Below is a clear, beginner-friendly explanation you can come back to whenever you need it.
Teen Patti basics
| Item | Standard rule |
|---|---|
| Deck | One standard 52-card deck, no jokers |
| Players | Usually 3 to 6 (can be 2 to 7) |
| Cards per player | 3, dealt face down |
| Card order | A (high), K, Q, J, 10 down to 2 |
| Goal | Hold the best three-card hand, or be the last player left in |
| Starting bet | A fixed “boot” amount from every player |
How to play Teen Patti: step by step
1. Post the boot
Every player puts the boot amount into the pot before cards are dealt. The boot also sets the first “current stake”.
2. Deal three cards
The dealer gives each player three cards face down, one at a time, going clockwise.
3. Choose to play blind or seen
This is what makes Teen Patti different from poker.
- Blind player: bets without looking at their cards.
- Seen player: has looked at their cards (also called playing “chaal”).
A blind player can look at their cards at any time, but once they do, they are a seen player for the rest of the hand.
4. Betting rounds
Players act in turn, clockwise. Under the most common rules:
- A blind player bets 1x to 2x the current stake.
- A seen player bets 2x to 4x the current stake.
- Any player can pack (fold) and leave the hand, losing what they have already put in.
The current stake changes as players raise. Exact multiples vary by table, so always check the rules shown at the table you are using.
5. Side show
A seen player can ask the seen player who bet just before them for a side show: a private comparison of the two hands. If the other player accepts, the weaker hand must pack. If the hands are equal, the player who asked usually packs. The other player can refuse.
6. Show
When only two players remain, either can pay for a show. Both hands are revealed and the better hand wins the whole pot. In many games, a seen player cannot ask a blind player for a show; a blind player asking for a show pays the blind rate.
Teen Patti hand rankings
From highest to lowest:
| Rank | Hand | Example | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trail (Trio, Set) | A♠ A♥ A♦ | Three cards of the same rank. A-A-A is the best hand |
| 2 | Pure Sequence (Straight Flush) | Q♥ K♥ A♥ | Three consecutive cards of the same suit |
| 3 | Sequence (Run) | 4♣ 5♦ 6♠ | Three consecutive cards, mixed suits |
| 4 | Colour (Flush) | 2♠ 7♠ J♠ | Three cards of the same suit, not in sequence |
| 5 | Pair | 9♦ 9♣ K♥ | Two cards of the same rank |
| 6 | High Card | A♣ 8♦ 3♠ | None of the above; highest card decides |
How sequences rank
The highest sequence is A-K-Q. In most Teen Patti rules, A-2-3 is the second highest, followed by K-Q-J, then Q-J-10, and so on down to 4-3-2. Some home games rank A-2-3 lowest instead, so agree on the rule before you start.
Breaking ties
- Trail: higher rank wins (A-A-A beats K-K-K).
- Sequences: compare the sequence position as above.
- Colour and High Card: compare the highest card, then the second, then the third.
- Pair: higher pair wins; if pairs are equal, the higher third card wins.
- If two hands are exactly equal, many tables give the pot to the player who did not ask for the show.
The real odds of each hand
With three cards from a 52-card deck, there are 22,100 possible hands. Here is how often each one appears:
| Hand | Number of combinations | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| Trail | 52 | 0.24% |
| Pure Sequence | 48 | 0.22% |
| Sequence | 720 | 3.26% |
| Colour | 1,096 | 4.96% |
| Pair | 3,744 | 16.94% |
| High Card | 16,440 | 74.39% |
An interesting quirk: a Pure Sequence is actually slightly rarer than a Trail, yet Trail ranks higher by tradition. Also note that roughly three hands in four are just High Card, which is why bluffing and blind play matter so much.
Common Teen Patti terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Boot | Compulsory starting bet from every player |
| Chaal | A bet made by a seen player |
| Blind | Playing without looking at your cards |
| Pack | Folding and leaving the hand |
| Side show | Private comparison with the previous seen player |
| Show | Final reveal when two players remain |
| Pot limit | Maximum pot size at which a show is forced (on some tables) |
Popular Teen Patti variations
- Joker / Wild card: one card, chosen at random, acts as a wild card.
- Muflis (Lowball): rankings are reversed, and the lowest hand wins.
- AK47: every Ace, King, 4 and 7 is wild.
- 999: the hand whose card values add up closest to 999 (or 9 in some versions) wins.
- Best of four: players get four cards and use their best three.
Online and live-dealer versions follow fixed table rules, which are always shown in the game’s information screen. For an overview of the casino games listed on the official site, see Lotus365 Casino.
Tips for learning the game
- Learn the rankings first. Most beginner mistakes come from misreading a Colour versus a Sequence.
- Remember the odds. A Pair or better appears in only about one hand in four.
- Understand blind play. Playing blind is cheaper per round but means betting without information.
- Practise with free or social versions. Play for fun before thinking about anything else.
- Set limits. Decide in advance how much time you will spend, and stop when you reach it.
